Hi! Anne Taintor here in Portland, Maine. My brother forwarded me your article. I LOVE what you've done with the cards! I am working today on another calendar for Chronicle Books, and I'm trying (kind of) hard to steer away from my more cynical images. Not easy. Trying at the moment to decide whether to include "she kind of enjoyed working for an idiot." Yes? No?
Oh, wow... Anne Taintor! Thank you and it is absolutely fantastic to hear from you. I would love to interview you actually… I will send you a direct message now.
OMG I love EVERYTHING about this post. I agree that the cultural zeitgeist shifted to make mothers who stay home feel less worthy than mothers who work outside the home. Your jewelry, and the postcards with new captions are dynamite!!! Fantastic!
Well, you knew rightly that this one would go right to my heart, subversive housewife that I am. What I call that particular psyops is Virginia Slims Feminism. It promoted an idea that got women to serve the Profiteers, the Usurpers--in addition to men--rather than freeing men to also serve the interests of family and community. For one generation, women had the choice to work or not work. Then the competitive two-income mortgage meant they lost the choice to not work, because no one could compete on only one income.
The pressure on men is not to be ignored. He now needs to earn a double-income in order for his wife to stay home. And this, in a gig economy with no job security.
My domestic goddess daughter just visited a friend whose husband is a CEO and would like to have kids. The friend doesn't work and is wanting to start her education towards a career in social work--a very long process as my daughter, who's in the same field, knows well. They're both 32. She admitted that her friend has everything she wants: a home she owns (well, the banks do technically but let's ignore that), a husband who makes the income and wants her to have kids. She's having to manage her resentment that her friend is throwing all that away.
My daughter also has one of that same artist's fridge magnets that shows a man in an apron doing the dishes, saying "I know what turns women on."
I don't want my daughters to go back to being my mother, with housewife as their only identity. The future I imagine enables women to raise children securely and prioritize them, while not needing to give up their own highest gifts. It also lets men choose useful roles working in the communities where they live. And property should stay within the family, solving homelessness in one generation.
Glad that you're re-moralizing the masses and love the 'excessive alliteration alert' along with its content! I need to play the beautiful video again with my eyes closed, just to listen this time. Great piece!
Epic and intelligent comment as I have come to expect from you, Tereza. Did you see the card, the one I said you inspired me to make? I texted it to you in the holidays. It was because I’ve seen you write a few times that you’re “just a housewife” (did I get the phrase right?) and how that’s not an insult.
I look forward to reading your new piece very soon. I’m sure I’ll love it! 🥰 Happy V-Day, missus!
I did see that, Neshma, and was honored! When I saw this post, I knew just what project had been gestating. And I still keep the mounted paint chips from the gorgeous earrings you gave me, because they're just so beautiful. I'm sure these will also become collector items!
Home is where the heart is; home is where we all go when we are tired and in need of some quiet time; home is where we gather friends and family. So...making a home a loving, peaceful and congenial place to be is something to be VERY proud of. Especially when children are present. xoxo Happy St. Valentine's Day.
I was fortunate to work in an industry (software) where I could earn enough to allow my wife to stay home with the kids and do homeschooling. We both were very happy with this arrangement. But this was back in the 80s and early 90s. I don't know what it would be like now.
I smiled throughout the entire written text, but especially during the groovy video displaying your lovely bijou and witty "adjustments" to the cards! Happy St. Valentine's Day to you and to all those subverting the subversive.
Wonderful delightful video! I listened with headphones and the music is great, too. Thanks for this.
Also: "Why are we in a time right now when men and women hate each other so much, or at least are supposed to?" That's yet another psyop that didn't work on me.

Oh and my answer to your question would be: “it depends… on whether you can turn it into a good story." 🤓

And my latest is VERY domestic in a way you'll appreciate--sharing your dreams of organized storage! https://thirdparadigm.substack.com/p/the-sox-box-miracle

I like the term "homemaker" instead of housewife.

Indeed. Agree with everything you wrote!
N, xo

Perfect card for the new era: remoralized and re-vivified and ready to get back to work -- domestic or any other kind!
Thanks Ayn! I’m hoping I get to rest a bit soon 🐣
You outdid yourself on this one, Micropixie!!!

Thanks Boze! Really Glad you enjoyed it :) <3

Thanks Mark! And I’m glad you stayed clear of the brainwashing…
Love how the article and video turned out! Glad I could contribute in a small way.
You were absolutely hermeneutical! 👏🏽
Brilliant post, I love seeing based women making original things.
Thanks so much! I love making that stuff you like.
